The Friends is an integral part of the King’s community. We value members of the broader school community: from support staff, teaching staff, porters to drivers of The Friends minibus. From time to time, individuals may retire or move on from King’s and to show our appreciation of their invaluable contribution to our child’s education or the school community, we call for donations to contribute to their leaving gift.

On this occasion our spotlight is on

Dr. Gerard Silverlock

~ Junior School Headmaster ~

and his retirement

Dr Gerard Silverlock joined KCJS in September 2006 as JS Headmaster and made his mark in his first week with the introduction of the online, weekly newsletter “Junior Views” which is now closing in on its 500th edition. He instigated changes to the nature of the admissions’ process, a reorganisation of Rushmere and introduced wellbeing to the Junior School’s teaching and learning ethos which gave pupils a greater say in how they were learning. Despite being an Arsenal supporter, sport at the school flourished. Music and drama, too, were championed; the quality of the annual Junior School play regularly reached West End standards whilst his introduction of the Junior College Singers gave more boys the chance to sing at a high level and at illustrious venues.

Dr. Silverlock would say, himself, that his greatest successes were the boys whom he attracted to join the school and the quality and nature of the members of staff he employed, including his successor whom he appointed as the Head of Modern Foreign Languages in 2013. Dr. Silverlock is described as a selfless leader of sharp mind, quick wit, good humour and boundless energy. He is not one to miss a school function, entertains us weekly with his Headmaster blogs and impresses us with his astonishing ability to recall the names of every boy he greets at Clifton Gate in the mornings. He has made a profound impact and contribution to the thriving community of the Junior School and we wish him all the very best in his retirement.
